Be Hospitable, 1 Peter 4:9amp
Devo 4/11/25…
1 Peter 4:9 AMP
[9] Be hospitable to one another without complaint.
1 Peter 4:9 NIV
[9] Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
1 Peter 4:9 NLT
[9] Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.
1 Peter 4:9 CEV
[9] Welcome people into your home and don't grumble about it.
I know you're asking why there are 4 different versions of the same scripture? Because we need to get it into our thick heads to be hospitable to everyone. Peter said to do so to one another. He also said don’t grumble about it. In three different versions we have “without complaint”, “without grumbling” and “don’t grumble about it”. Ask yourself this question: Am I grumbling about being hospitable to others? We’ve done it so much that sometimes we don’t ever realize that we are complaining or grumbling about doing something nice for someone else “other than” ourselves. And it’s interesting where he dropped this phrase in this chapter. It was right after the scripture about love covering a multitude of sins and right before using the special gift that God has given you to “serve” others. Hmmmmmm, interesting. Coincidence, I think not!
As believers we have not only forgotten how to be hospitable to one another but also to non-believers. Why would a non-believer want to be saved if saved people can’t even be hospitable to one another? Where is your hospitality?!
And let’s look at the NLT version: Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. It could not be any plainer than that. CHEERFULLY share your home with those who need a meal or place to stay. Do not grumble or complain about it. The homeless person, the addict, the lady of the evening, the spouse who has been kicked out or the child that has been kicked out needs a meal; and a place to stay. That guy who may have lost his job and his wife due to infidelity may need those, too. The young lady who's a single mom, who got pregnant again and the father has disappeared needs both of those as well. Remember the previous verse “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). You seemed to have forgotten they covered yours and continue to do so. Quit your judgement and be hospitable to those in need. Last time I read it Christ forgave the woman at the well and the thief next to Him on the cross. Be hospitable. Quit complaining. Love your neighbor.
