Listen to the Silent Wind, 1 Kings 19:11-13NIV

Silent Wind

King's X

What did you say there my sister my brother - you talking to me?

What denomination? the whole thing seems crazy to me

Don't know

I sometimes wonder if we're walking down the same line

Must go

I'm sorry to say that while you talk I keep my eye on the time

And when we pray

Do we listen to the Silent Wind?

And if we pray

Do we listen for the Silent Wind?

What did you say?

Well the truth is just what it simply is

Maybe I'm lazy or maybe I never was a conversation whiz

Don't know

But can we pull down the walls for just a moment or two

Must go

And maybe look beyond ourselves to see whatever is true

And when we pray

Do we listen to the Silent Wind?

And if we pray

Will we listen for the Silent Wind?

And when we pray

Is our hand against the Silent Wind?

And if we pray

Will we breathe in the Silent Wind?

Yes, this is an amazing song and you should go listen to it right now!  Don’t worry I’ll wait, I’ll be right here.

Okay, now that you’re back, yes, this song deals with two primary subjects:  denominations and listening to the Holy Spirit.  It discusses both in conjunction with one another but separately at the same time.  Romans 14 teaches us that just because you observe one thing and your brother doesn’t, does not mean that you are right.  It also does not mean that you are wrong and vice versa.  Thus the reason why Doug Pinnick was questioning this and was confused as to why we have denominations in the first place, when we have been specifically told in scripture that it does not matter.  Doug goes on to say in this song what matters is do you listen to the silent wind (Ps. 37:7 & Ps. 85:8 & Prov. 3:6).  What matters is that when you pray are you listening to God?  Do you and are you listening to and for His voice? In other words, he is echoing what Paul said in Romans 14, just in a different way.  The only thing that matters is Christ.  Jesus is the unifying piece.  As long as we all agree that Jesus is the truth, the way and the life, then nothing else matters.  However, Doug is dead on in the area of are we hearing God’s voice?  Are you still enough to hear the silent wind when you pray?  Do you know the sound of His voice? Have you heard the silent wind in your life (Acts 2:1-2)?

A prime example of what Doug is talking about is found in 1 Kings 19:11-13:  11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

It was “a gentle whisper”.  Elijah knew the voice of the Lord.  He was paying attention.  He “heard” everything else but was “listening” for the gentle whisper.  Once he heard it, that’s when he “moved” to the mouth of the cave.  Don’t “move” on anything until you have “listened” for His voice.  Doug has asked the right questions.  When we pray do we listen to the silent wind? Do you know the voice of the Lord? Do we as believers know the voice of the Lord?

So, nobody cares how you worship!  Nobody cares about your “doctrinal beliefs” or your mission statements or your political platforms that you choose to push from the pulpit! Do you agree that Jesus is the truth, the way and the life?! If so, do you listen to His voice?!
