Can I Get An Amen?, Ps. 103:2-5 & Ps. 24:1 NIV
Amen
(lyrics by Halestorm)
My life, my love
My sex, my drug, my lust
My God, it ain't no sin
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
My grace, my church
My pain, my tears, my hurt
My God, I'll say it again
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
There is a lot of pride in this song. None of this belongs to you or us. Remember who gave these things to you, they belong to Him, all glory goes to Him and thanks goes to Him (1 Thess. 5:16-18). Don't be like King Saul, 1 Samuel 13:8-14, his illegal sacrifice and his sparing of Agag in 1 Samuel 15. Pride will knock you down real quick.
Remember where you came from:
Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Ps. 103:2-5 NIV
Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail. Lamentations 3:21:22 NIV
Ps. 24:1, The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it
Your life and your love come from God (1 John 4:7-12). God created sex. You didn’t. We are to turn away, repent, from drugs and lust. Those are not from God. He hates sin and cannot look at it, thus the reason Jesus died for our sins. Definitely not and never will it be your grace, it’s HIS grace that has saved you. Ephesians 1:6-7, to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. Church? The body of Christ? Obviously His, because of the phrase “body of Christ”. We are His body, not the other way around. Matthew 16:18, And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades (death) will not overpower it [by preventing the resurrection of the Christ].
James 4:6, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble". (ESV)
For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world, 1 John 2:16. We don’t “amen” the world. We are not in agreement with the world because those of the world do not love God. We are in agreement with God because He first loved us and we love Him (1 John 4:16 & 19).
It should have been written like this:
His life, HIs love
No mess, no drugs, no lust
My God, help me not to sin
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
HIs grace, His church
No pain, no tears, no hurt
Thank God, I'll say it again
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
Can I get an (hey), can I get an amen?
The crazy thing is that this is one of my favorite Halestorm songs: musically. You can't get away from that riff, driving rhythm in the chorus and the hook is on point. However, it is a gentle reminder to us that at the end of the day all things belong to Him who created us. When we start looking at things through the lens of “my this” and “my that” on the daily, my friends, that means our hearts have ended up in the wrong place. That is pride, ladies and gentlemen. Remember you own nothing.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also, Matt. 6:21 & He must become greater; I must become less, John 3:30.
When you become less, He becomes your treasure.
Can I get an (hey), can I get an Amen?!
