In Him We Are Complete, Col. 2:9-10ESV

 Devo 5/29/26…

Gloria (U2)

I try to sing this song

I, I try to stand up

But I can't find my feet

I try, I try to speak up

But only in you I'm complete

Gloria, in te domine

Gloria, exultate

Gloria, gloria

Oh Lord, loosen my lips

I try to sing this song

I, I try to get in

But I can't find the door

The door is open

You're standing there

You let me in

Gloria, in te domine

Gloria, exultate

Oh Lord, if I had anything

Anything at all

I'd give it to you

I'd give it to you

Gloria, in te domine

Gloria, gloria

Gloria, in te domine

Gloria, gloria

Gloria, in te domine

Gloria, gloria

If you’ve never heard this song before I highly suggest you go listen to it.  It is from U2’s second album October.  I also highly suggest listening to the album.  It was written and recorded 7 years after the death of Bono’s mother.  On this album he continues to deal with that grief.  In my opinion, it is one of their most spiritual albums and definitely in the top 5, if we were to list a top 5 of U2 albums.  The lyrics and the emotion on this album is intense but real.  For all intents and purposes, Gloria is a praise song.

It features a chorus sung in Latin, from the liturgical "Gloria in Excelsis Deo".

The chorus "Gloria in te Domine / Gloria exultate" translates to "Glory in You, Lord / Glory, exalt [Him]" with "exalt" in the imperative mood, a reference to Psalm 30:2 (in te Domine, speravi). The song also contains references to Colossians 2:9-10 ("Only in You I'm complete") and James 5:7-9 ("The door is open / You're standing there").

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.  Col. 2:9-10ESV

Lord my God, I called to you for help,(D)

and you healed me.(E)  Psalms 30:2NIV

Be patient, therefore, brothers,[a] until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.  James 5:7-9ESV

He tries to sing a song.  He tries to get in, he tries to stand and find his feet and fails at all of it.  It is only when he invites the Lord into his life that the Lord opens the door for him and he is able to enter.  It is the Lord who enables him to stand, find his feet and then he is able to walk.  He finds his voice due to the Lord being in his life that has allowed him to stand and to enter into rooms he could not get into before he knew the Lord.  Therefore he praises Him! He asks the Lord to loosen his lips so he can praise Him!  He wants to give Him everything he has but he has nothing to give Him because everything he has belongs to the Lord so all he can give Him is his life.  And this is how we are supposed to live our lives for the Lord.  We give Him our life.  We give up everything and live for Him.  We give up everything, take up our cross and follow Him. The second thing that can be derived from this song is that the one thing that he is able to give Him is praise! Which is also what we are called to do.  We are called to give Him praise.  He gets all the praise, all the honor and all the glory.  Only He is worthy of glory and only in Him are we complete.
