Looking for Us, Luke 15:3-7
A standard, a program, religion, burn me at the stake
I questioned, I listened, I worshipped, how can I relate?
I worked so hard at it ... oh lord, the bruises and the burns
I just don't, don't get it, I guess I lost my faith
Oh, lookin' for love
Oh, lookin' for love
Woah, lookin' for love
Oh, lookin' for love
Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:3-7
As much as I love Doug and as much as I love King’s X, in this situation or upon reflecting upon this lyric, we don’t have to go looking for love because love has come and found us. We have never had to go searching for love and that’s the problem. Why are we going to search for love when it has already come. All you have to do is accept it. Unfortunately, the words “a standard, a program, religion” are what has killed Doug’s relationship with God and the institution of the church, not the body of Christ. Two different things, but no time to explain that at the moment. What Doug forgot is that yes, there has to be a standard, which is love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul. And, then love your neighbor. That’s it, however, unfortunately, some of us are to blame for not showing that. Next, a program but there is no program when it comes to a “relationship” with Jesus. Just follow Him and His word.
Religion came up with programs on how to follow Jesus. They instilled having “to work hard at it” when you don’t have to. The "religious establishment” decided on programs on how to get close to Jesus when Jesus already spelled it out in all four Gospels: take up your cross and follow me. Thus, He came to us and said these things. He left heaven and came to us. He died on the cross for us. He rose again, just to be with us. Just as His father did in the Garden, when He went looking for Adam and Eve, He came here to earth to have a “relationship” with us. Love came looking for us. The song should be titled Looking for Us. He left the 99 to look for us. And everything that Doug has gone through was the whole reason why He came to earth. He came so Doug wouldn’t have to do all of those things he thought he needed to.
All we need to do is take up our crosses and follow Him. (Matt. 16:24)
