A Life with Jesus, Col. 1:18ESV

Drinks flow

People forget

That big wheel spins, the hair thins

People forget

Forget they're hiding

The news slows

People forget

Their shares crash, hopes are dashed

People forget

Forget they're hiding

Behind an eminence front

An eminence front, it's a put on

It's just an eminence front

An eminence front, it's a put on

An eminence front

An eminence front, it's a put on

Eminence front

It's an eminence front, it's a put on

It's a put on, it's a put on, it's a put on  (Eminence Front, The Who)

Yes, I think one of the things people forget is that this was The Who’s first album after Keith Moon passed.  Eminence Front was on their tenth album It’s Hard in 1982.  Apart from the lyrics the other obvious thing that stands out about this song is John Entwistle’s impeccable bass riffs.  The bass on this track is sick and stands to reason why it is one of my favorite songs by The Who.  The lyrics describe a party in which people hide from their problems behind a façade. Pete Townsend said it refers to a false facade of superiority, wealth, or importance used to mask inner emptiness, drug-fueled delusions, or insecurity.

Eminence:  a position of superiority, distinction, high rank, or fame; a high or raised piece of ground.  The facade of superiority, position or fame.  The facade of being elevated or above everyone else when you’re not.  We forget most people will put on this front.  Thus the reason, “It’s a put on, it’s a put on, it’s a put on”.

People forget, the world is an eminence front.  The world likes to try to give us this facade of being better or superior to others, when in fact we are not.  We fail and struggle just like everyone else.  We have trials and tribulations just as everyone else. The world can teach you to hide behind that facade to hide your emptiness and insecurities.  Some have been behind it for so long that they actually believe it.   However, Christ is not a “put on”.   He is the real deal.  He is your everything.  The world is nothing and has nothing for you. It is time to stop hiding behind the world’s lies and stop hiding behind your hurt. You can only hide for so long.  What type of front is it that you hide behind?  You can't hide from God.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.  Genesis 3:8NIV

We hide because we know we're guilty.  We hide because we know we are wrong and we know we have sinned (Gen. 3:9-11).  We put up an eminence front which is hilarious because we have and hold no power over life and death.

And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.  Colossians 1:18ESV

Preeminent:  eminent above or before others; superior; surpassing. A synonym for preeminent would be supreme. Jesus is supreme.  He is above all others and all things. And, because of Jesus’ preeminence we don't have to hide, because He died for us. He took our place as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Therefore without shame,  we can come boldly to the throne and receive forgiveness and grace and Mercy (Hebrews 4:16ESV).  It is time to set ourselves free from this facade the world would like us to hide behind.  The life we think is better than our neighbors or the life we think puts us above others, is not the life that will fulfill us.  A life with Jesus is the life that will fulfill us and set us free.   A life with Jesus is not a “put on” it’s real life. People forget.  Don’t forget Jesus.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  John 8:36ESV
